Taking care of your skin during the Summertime.
Calling skincare lovers! Did you know that as the seasons change, so should your skincare regimen? Summer usually equals longer hours of daylight, and hot or humid weather - all of which have a very different affect on your skin compared to colder days. Thankfully, you can stay on top of your skin’s health and ensure it is glowing all summer long by adjusting your skincare routine with these simple summer skincare tips:
1. Apply Sunscreen Often: In case you didn’t know, the summer sun beams down a lot more than just warm beams of light. It also beams down harmful UV rays. Too much exposure to UV rays can cause a red, burning sensation, aka summer’s public enemy number one – the sunburn! This is because UV rays cause damage at a cellular level, resulting in redness of the skin and even putting you at risk for signs of aging like saggy skin, sun spots, and wrinkling. Unfortunately, aging skin and a nasty burn is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the damage the sun can really wreak, especially when considering that frequent UV ray exposure results in a heightened risk for skin cancer! Protect your skin from the harsh summer sun (the best way you can) by applying sunscreen often! We recommend opting for sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum UV protection and is at least SPF30 or higher for optimum skin safety. And remember, applying sunscreen once in the morning isn’t enough. You should be reapplying each time you head into the sun. Also, if you are after that bronzed, sun-kissed glow, it’s time to make “fake tan” your new best friend!
2. Don’t Forget to Moisturize: Many people mistakenly think that moisturizing is a winter skincare activity. Well, we are here to inform you that it is an all-around skincare essential! Depending on where you live, the summer air can be dry and arid rather than humid, thereby sucking the moisture out of the surrounding air, and subsequently your skin. Those living in humid environments shouldn’t sleep on moisturizing either, as environmental factors like air conditioners can also dry out your skin. Another good reason to continue to moisturize is that modern moisturizers have ingredients that your skin can benefit from no matter the season, such as hyaluronic acid and squalene. We recommend applying moisturizer morning and evening, no matter the season. While you shouldn’t adjust your schedule, you can adjust the type of moisturizer you use. Many find swapping out their usual moisturizer for a lighter weight one during the summer not only feels more comfortable, but also improves their skin texture.
3. Go Lighter on Makeup: Just as you can go lighter on moisturizer during the summertime, you may also benefit from going lighter on makeup. On warmer days, wearing a ton of makeup can not only be uncomfortable, but also look cakey as your skin tries to sweat it off. During these humid days, it is better to let your skin breathe by opting for light layers of makeup or even going makeup free. If you are going to wear makeup, we recommend opting for one with a built-in SPF for added protection. You can also try a tinted moisturizer with SPF for a lighter choice. Remember though, just because makeup has built in SPF doesn’t mean you can skip out on using additional facial sunscreen.
4. Exfoliate Weekly: Sunscreen and sweat are two words that are synonymous with summer. While both work in different ways to protect the skin, they both are known for clogging pores. This is where exfoliating comes in! Exfoliation can help unclog your pores from all the sunscreen and sweat build up that accumulates over the week, thereby reducing your risk of a breakout. While exfoliating more often during the summer is okay, we recommend keeping it an activity that is performed no more than once or twice a week, and never if your skin is sunburned!
